We left Green Bay Saturday around 11:00 a.m. and headed north. Our goal was to get to Marquette MI by the afternoon, however we did have to take one quick side trip to Lena to Kugel’s Cheese store. Gotta have those fresh cheese curds, plus some good Guda and Habanero Monterey Jack Cheese!!! So then we needed to get back over to 41 to head north, rather than back track on 141, we decide to cut across on A which turned out to be detoured and so we had to cut across on J. Well that road was also under construction and was all loose gravel. We drove no more than 5 miles an hour and I thought every dish in the motorhome was going to break. I didn’t even want to think of what was going to come flying out of every cabinet when we opened them when we got to our destination. We have to get some bars to secure stuff better.
But after that we were on Hwy 41 north then hwy 35 and what a nice drive that was. Got to see a lot of Lake Michigan and just some really pretty country. It was amazing how it was 92 out and then when we got close to the lake it dropped to 75, then as the road took us more inland, right back at 92 we were. I think we were about 10 miles to Marquette when we realized that we hit a time zone change, so we lost an hour yesterday. It was strange that at almost 10pm it was still a little light out here. After we got through Marquette we headed west to a small little blip on the map called Champion. There is the Michigamme Lake, it’s quite large and very pretty. The water is also really clear. We pulled into Michigamme Shores Campground. Nice place, not to big – here’s the web site if anyone wants to check it out. http://www.michigammeshores.com/
We set up and finally got down to eating around 8:30, but it was really 7:30 for us and plus we had a late lunch in Escanaba so it was all good. Took a little bike ride after dinner then settled in for the night. Got up this morning and sat outside with my coffee. It is so peaceful here – quite time here is 10pm – 10am. The smell of pine is strong and lots of birds chirping away. We hear we are in moose and bear country, but so far all we’ve seen are chipmunks. We’ll be on the lookout with camera in hand.
We may stay here for a few days or maybe longer, we haven’t decided yet. Then head north to Baraga then Copper Harbor.
I’m attaching photos with captions so it will be easier to figure out what each is. If you click on the first picture, it should bring up a slide show for you. We’ll post more over the next few days too.
